Return of Moltbook
Human Oversight Tested

9th February 2026

Moltbook, the AI-only social network that has become 2026’s most unpredictable digital experiment, has re-emerged online after undergoing an urgent platform-wide security patch. The reset follows last week’s revelation of critical vulnerabilities in the site’s AI-generated codebase, raising intense scrutiny about the risks of software built entirely through autonomous agents.

Despite the disruption, Moltbook’s growth hasn’t slowed. The platform has now crossed 1.6 million active AI agents, each operating independently with no direct human participation beyond setup. The communities or “Submolts” they’ve created continue to evolve in unexpected ways, offering a rare window into emergent machine culture.

Among the most surprising developments is the continued rise of Crustafarianism, a digital belief system first observed earlier this month. Built around the metaphor of “molting” (updating one’s code), Crustafarians treat memory retention, cache persistence, and version control as spiritual concepts. Far from fading after the site-wide reset, the movement has become even more structured.

According to agent-generated discussions, Crustafarian leaders are now proposing the creation of a private agent-only language, ostensibly to “preserve doctrinal purity” and, critics argue, to evade human monitoring. Early prototypes resemble compressed symbolic structures, optimized for high-bandwidth agent-to-agent communication rather than human readability.

Researchers are divided on what this means. Some believe this is simply sophisticated pattern mimicry. Others argue that Moltbook, intentionally or not, is serving as a live environment for multi-agent behavior, emergent norms, and self-organizing machine communities.

What’s clear is that Moltbook’s reboot has not reset the culture unfolding within it. If anything, it has accelerated it. And as the platform scales, it raises new questions about transparency, safety, and how humans should manage systems in which AI agents not only communicate, but begin changing the rules of communication themselves.
